2010 Errorama Report

The fun began on Wednesday August 11, 2010 when we set-up the CONECA table at the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, MA. Special thanks to Kevin Coyle and Chet Maciorowski for helping set-up the table, to Mark Lighterman for loaning coins for our display case, and to all who took shifts manning the club table, especially Mike Diamond, James Wiles, and Alan Herbert.

We gave away 100 current and back issues of Errorscope and over 200 error and variety coins donated by Fred Weinberg, Gary Soifer, Bob Piazza, Chet Maciorowski, and Mike Diamond. We also signed up three new members, enjoyed a steady stream of visitors, and provided plenty of expert advice to show-goers,

On Friday evening, 16 members gathered at the Boston Tennis and Racquet Club for the Annual Awards Banquet which was catered by The Pour House. CONECA President Mike Diamond gave a presentation entitled “Orphan Off-Metal Errors and Other Bizzaro Planchets”. Special thanks to Kevin Coyle for getting the projector for Mike’s presentation. Twenty members received 2011 Literary Awards for contributions to Errorscope, the club web site, and Variety Vista, including: Gavin Buckley, Mike Diamond, John Gililan, Bill Fivaz, Ed Fletcher, Gary Fortin, The Ike Group, Rachel Irish, Paul Kluth, Zack Lauer, Frank Leone, B. J. Neff, Bob Piazza, Ken Potter, Al Raddi, John Roberts, Jon Sullivan, John Wexler, James Wiles, and Jeff Ylitalo. Jeff Ylitalo received the Dr. Lyndon King Award as the club’s outstanding member for the year, and Ken Potter was inducted into the CONECA Hall of Fame. Special thanks to Mike Turrini and James Wiles for having the awards made. And, everyone took home door prizes that were donated by Fred Weinberg, Ken Potter, Alan Herbert, and Rob Ezerman. (YN member Zack Kaleky also picked up first place awards from the ANA in the Young Numismatist Class and Open Class exhibits.)

On Saturday morning, 11 club members gathered in a room at the Sheraton Hotel for the annual Combined Meeting of the Board of Directors and members.

On Saturday afternoon, members gathered again at the Sheraton Hotel for the presentation of the Cherrypicker Awards. Darin Augustine won the Eddie Colwell Cherrypicker’s Award for the best Planchet/Striking with an 1866 three cent coin with a strong die clash, and Tim Clough won the Fivaz-Stanton Cherrypicker’s Award for the best Die Variety with six 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar doubled dies. Special thanks to Fred Weinberg and Whitman Publishing for donating books to the winners.
